Each year, the Oriental Academy recognizes individuals whose scholarship, artistry, and dedication to cultural preservation embody our founding mission. These honors celebrate lifetimes of achievement and the promise of emerging voices alike.
Award Categories
Four distinctions given each year to those who advance Art, Literature, and Culture in the spirit of Ars Gratia Artis.
Lifetime Achievement Award
Our highest honor, bestowed on a scholar or artist whose body of work has shaped the field over decades.
Literary Excellence Award
Given to an outstanding published work of fiction, poetry, or criticism in English or an Indian language.
Young Scholar Award
Recognizing researchers under thirty-five whose early work shows exceptional promise in the humanities.
Cultural Preservation Award
Honoring individuals or institutions dedicated to safeguarding endangered languages, folk traditions, and heritage crafts.
The Oriental Academy Medal of Honor
A Legacy in Bronze
Struck each year and presented at the Annual Award Night, the Medal of Honor bears the Academy's ancient vessel emblem and the laureate's name in perpetuity within our archives.

Selection Criteria
Laureates are judged on originality, contribution to cross-cultural dialogue, and the demonstrable impact of their work on the preservation or advancement of Art, Literature, and Culture.

Call for Nominations
Members, institutions, and the public may nominate candidates each spring, with supporting documentation of their work.
Screening Committee
A preliminary committee verifies eligibility and shortlists candidates for full jury evaluation.
Jury Evaluation & Ceremony
An independent jury of senior scholars selects the laureates, honored at the Annual Award Night each December.
