Few Words about Taslima Nasrin

Mrs.Taslima Nasrin, the revolutionary feminist author, human rights activist, and humanist, started writing in post-Independence Bangladesh in the 1970s. She has written a large number of books on poetry, essays, novels, short stories, and memoirs. Some of her books have been translated into several languages. She became renowned as a poet, columnist, novelist, and an independent feminist in the late 1980s. However, she was forced out of her country because of her writings on protection of women’s rights against religious fanaticism. Nasrin was born in Mymensingh on 25 August 1962. Her father was Dr Rajab Ali and her mother Edul Ara. After completing her higher secondary education in 1978, she studied at Mymensingh Medical College, subsequently receiving the MBBS degree in 1984. Although she worked for the Government as a doctor, She left the national medical service in 1993. In the same year Nasrin became an international cause célèbre when a fatwa was issued against her in reaction to her novel ‘Lajja’(Shame, 1993), which depicts the persecution of a Hindu family by religious fanatics of Bangladesh. Besides her poems, novels, essays & belle letters, she is famous for her series of autobiographical writings starting with ‘Amar Meyebela(My Girlhood,1999)’. Her other autobiographical writings like ‘Utal Hawa(Wild Wind, 2002) & ‘Dwikhandito(Divided, 2003) etc. were very much acclaimed by avid readers as well as intellectuals across the world.
